RE: Let's talk about our jobs!
I work 12 departments in a grocery store.
Twelve. Produce (fruits/veggies) Im a night clerk, i also manage the scales, the machines, the labels, the pricing, the experation date management. Grocery (non perishing foods) i stock up and refill all the empty shelves in the store, this also includes getting them from trailers, breaking them down and the what not. Cashier: I am the "desperate USE KING MICKEY" cashier for the store. Where i hit Triangle to charge up the cashiers powerlevels... actually im a quick rush cashier. Dairy: Milk Eggs, Butter, I load there too Bakery: I cut bread Porter: I clean spills on the storefront, not the bathrooms Frozen: I load frozen trailers into the giant freezer using a handjack Salad Bar: I put up and down salad bar, keep things sanitary, clean, fresh and good looking. Florist: I wrap flowers for late night customers, or blow up balloons. During big flowerdays i cut roses in collections over 60 dozen. Seafood: I sell seafood for promotions. Luckly its all non cuttable. Entertainment: Along with selling Seafood I also promote holidays, serve samples, dress in costumes and run around Managers Lackey: I do oddjobs for managers including fixing scales, price checks, destroying displays, taking down signs using a giant handclaw etc My store manager comments: This is "Nokame" he's the whatever the hell you want him to be guy. Supposidly, these shifts are to be seperated by days (example: 10-5:30 Grocery or 9am-12pm Salad Bar / 12-6pm Cashier) but sometimes I end up doing 2-5 jobs in a 4-8 hour shift. at 9.35/per hour also, seeing my work schedule you can see the sparadic hour fluxuations i get. Sometimes over 30 hours (for partime) sometimes 4. |

RE: Let's talk about our jobs!
Dayum... It must make it hard to keep your finances in order if you don't know how much money you're earning each week. Bet you've run into problems over that, haven't you?
You know, I also find it weird how you're a "jack of all trades" kind of guy. Maybe it's because in an office environment everyone's role tends to be highly compartmentalized...which I don't like much, to be honest. It means you only have to master one skill set, yeah...but what happens when you leave the company and need to find another job? You really need diverse skills or a lot of doors will be closed to you. It's why I don't mind leaping at the chance to do things outside of my normal duties with mail. |

RE: Let's talk about our jobs!
It's no surprise. =\ It's like any part-time retail-esque job (I was never sure if grocery was under that category). When I worked at the theater, my boss man liked keeping me because I knew every job. So, when he needed to send people on break, I could cover for any of the positions. Of course, there were far fewer (just concession, door, and box), but the point I'm trying to make is that it's not uncommon that if you're a good employee, they'll train you in a lot of positions.
Nok, how long have you been working there? |
