The consol lost in time...
Hey all.

This might be a bit of a random topic, but I thought it would be a bit interesting to talk about. What am I talking about? Well....

THE SEGA MASTER SYSTEM

This one really does seem to be lost in time. When I first heard about the different consoles, I was told that the Sega Genesis was the very first consol. Which made me question "Well, where does my Sega Master System come in"? Because since I was a kid we had it, along with the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Turns out, the Master System -was- in fact the first. So then, why is it that I don't even HEAR about this system? I really would like to know. According to Wikipedia, it was a flop, but still, there was a lot of things that completely FLOPED and yet you hear about them; like the Power Glove or the Genesis attachments. So why is it that this consol never gets named?

Any thoughts on this?

I was aware of the Master System, too. I think it disappeared into obscurity when everything it played was ported to the more portable Game Gear. I owned one of those.

I heard it was garbage. =| But, hey. Not everything they put out on the market will be successful.

This is the Nostalgia Filter at work... [link here]

In regards to art, people only tend to remember the very best and/or very wors workst years after they were released. Anything of average or mediocre quality tends to be forgotten. The same is true of video games.

Everyone in America remembers the NES and the Genesis because they were such big hits. Flops in the NES Power Glove and the Sega CD and Sega 32X (I presume you mean these by Genesis attachments) are remembered because they're attached to these two consoles.

I guess the Master System was just okay enough in quality to not be remembered on down the road? Cause it sure wasn't as awful as that E.T. game for the Atari....EVERYONE remembers the story of unsold cartridges being buried in the desert XD

Wow, more replies than suspected. Then again, with a site filled with old fossils-SHOT-

@_@

But in all seriousness, for me at least, the Master System was better than the NES. We had better games for it and it worked better....Unlike the NES. >> I played the Master System more than the NES when I was smaller and I still prefer it over the NES. It makes me want to find the old games I don’t have, as I hardly having anything worth a library on it.

o=

(And yes Nail, I mean those attachments. And the Mark III is the Master System. Mark III is the Japanese name and also the name used in Brazil, Master System is the American and European name for it. )

BD Call me that again and I'll make sure you become one before me. Aw... <3

And NES rocked for its time. I doubt I would ever play it anymore for a long while though because I really overkilled its gameplay. My brother and I had some thirty-six games although we lost a lot of them due to my sister's dorm fire in '02. It was good for what it was though.

RE: The consol lost in time...
At the time it was pretty much thought that the Sega Master System was a rip-off of Nintendo. No it's not true, but when new products come out, you know how people get. Sega pretty much literally only took off once they hit the Genesis and, specifically, Sonic the Hedgehog. The pure speed (by comparison) of the system was unlike anything they'd seen before and was shown off quite well by our favorite blue hedgehog.

RE: The consol lost in time...
Well, I'd like to say that's true but umm...well....>.>;;;

Let's just say not only does the Sega Master System have Sonic the Hedgehog, but they have several other Sonic titles, Earthworm Jim, and among many other games. In fact, the highest year on a game to be realeased was 1994. And I have yet to find a reason -why-. :/

Not saying I'm right, but this is considerably intersting.

Also, I don't think it was as much as a rip off as you say. It could of been one of the reason, but my dad ( who bought the thing around the time it first came out) said it was most likely because of there little 'anti-trust' activies*...>.>

(Note that he said it was basicly that, but they we never charged of anything on it.)
