Whatever Happened to...

RE: Whatever Happened to...
Exactly my point. As a result of this a lot of decent people went walkies because zealous staff were killing the OOC element. And now the rot has well and truly took hold. I can see what you're saying about how it hasn't happened for a while, but to see the root of this problem you gotta cast your eye back to the past, and I'll bet you a lot of peeps are still a bit touchy about coming here - strict staff(or the fact that they used to be) being one of those reasons.

Plan some sort of big shiny event for Halloween. Or create a section of the forum where people can spam(but not have post count added to their total). Engage people in ways other than "we iz teh roleplayurs lolz!", y'know? Encouraging people to come on down and be a part of SA is something I'd say is very lacking.

I've got a cunning idea all of a sudden, along the lines of what I'm doing over on SB. I'mma make a topic nao.

In any case, I suggested "Awaiting Authorization" people can use the OOC sections too.

I thought that was the case, or had been for the last year or so? [confused]

RE: Whatever Happened to...
Whilst eyes are on this thread, I would make a suggestion that if implemented, would go a long way towards improving activity on the main boards. I've been here on and off a while now, and have frequented many other forums so allow me to pass on some of the things I've picked up. And no, this isn't a how-to-get-people-onto-the-board thing, it's a how-to-keep-your-existing-members-here kinda thing.

First one is a no-brainer - get rid of the shoutbox. People click on that and spam away there, look at the front page of the forum and see no new posts, and move on.

Second - replace it with a thread within the Game Forum. In fact the whole Game forum could be revamped and injected with life.
Create a sub-forum within it, disable post counts and basically let havoc run riot. Within that section, make a sticky topic whereupon people can come in and say hi, and spam away there. A shoutbox in a thread.
Benefits of this: if people want to be a muppet, they now have a place to do so. They have to navigate to the threads in question, and thus are looking at other topics.

Encouragement should be supplied to begin topics in the first place. Inspiration will ebb and flow from a spam area, as people feel more confident that there are people online to talk to they'll translate their activity into other areas of the board. And as a direct result, your roleplaying should increase in quantity too.

Next point is going to be largely controversial... I suggest a MASSIVE revamping of the staff. The guys on board were here when I joined 3 or 4 years ago, and seemed to be lacking interest in both the forum and the hedgehog then. And now? The guys, whilst doing a great job, seem slightly lacking in the motivation department when it comes to stepping up to the place and actually moving things forwards.
Now before you jump down my throat and kill me, I have another point to make. I'm probably exaggerating but you also have way too many staff. At least 50-70% of your active members are staff. That's not very good, especially when the perception I'm picking up is that 80% of them do jack. I can't be nice about it, and dress it up to look better - I think the staff are lazy. Period.
I think in the end a) we have too much staff and b) we have too much staff that just don't care about Sonic anymore. We need young people on it. Smart kids. but people that will be around another 2-3 years and aren't in college yet. They have the time and passion on their hands. The peeps who have been here, let go of your power and give it to someone who has the drive and the passion to make this place exactly what it deserves to be.
And if any of you turn round and say "well I don't think I want to do that, there's nobody here who could do a better job than me" then have you even considered looking? Rose has been around for years and matured nicely. The Trio, as I'll call them, are well-behaved. There are others.

Those are the two crucial points that I can pick up on. The shoutbox I can see happening. The second, I think you'll be too greedy with the power you don't use to do the right thing and give the younger, fresher members a chance.

RE: Whatever Happened to...
I think the community just got tired of posting is all, but I wasn't on this board since before it got switched over here, because I had lost the internet. But I've seen that there's still the same exact staff.

And you know, I probably would've never gone back here if it weren't for Nail Strafer telling me about this site again, because I had forgotten all about it. If it weren't for me, you'd probably not have a Tails yet.

I'll be honest, I don't play Sonic the hedgehog games anymore, but that's because I'm very short on money. However, I got the Sonic mega collection and my god is that ever fun. Granted I don't play it much because I'm always off doing stuff, but when I'm bored I know where to turn to. Thanks Sega.

Tails is still my favorite video game character in the whole world. I love that bundle of fur. He's been with me since I've played Sonic the hedgehog 2. And I'm going to try to get done with Enticed Darkness at some point and my god will that ever be fun.

I try to watch Sonic X just so I can see that beautiful hunk of fox - Tails is so cute. I could just hug him forever. It's just that it's on very early. It's very hard to wake up at my age. I'm going to be 24 in a few months and that is just scary.

I believe the latest game I got for Sonic was "Sonic Heroes" - Not exactly the best game considering how hard it was to get through this one level where you're trying to escape a volcano, but it's very fun. I might try to play it again when I can get my computer set up, which will be sometime in the winter. But it isn't entirely likely, because I just don't have the money nor the time to just sit on my butt all day playing video games when I can just watch a movie or write a book.

Yes, Metallix, I agree... we probably should get some staff that actually enjoy Sonic the hedgehog, but you also have to realize Metallix - you have to ask yourself this question... Would the board go in total chaos with younger staff members?

As you guys and gals know, gamers are very fat. They don't do anything productive. they just sit in front of a TV and just move their thumbs around. Except for the Wii of course, but I don't know if I'm up for it. I don't know exactly how I would fare as a staff member, all I know is that at some point I'm going to get done with Enticed Darkness and then with that story, I know I'll become a huge Tails fan. I just love that fox, that bundle of fur, Tails is so cute.

When I finally get something I need very badly, like money at some point. I'll probably try and get Sonic unleashed or that one Sonic game for the DS. Was it Sonic Chronicles?

I don't know if i'd be helpful as a staff member, I think I would be too busy with my writing to even try to fix the board. So right now, I'm just happy I get to RP as Tails. Yeehaw.

Now I love this little bit right here assuming all gamers are fat and lazy. Makes me feel right at home. =D

Granted, I've also been known to be occasionally Sarcastic...

RE: Whatever Happened to...
I have to say, Tech. That was a very rude stereotype to note. =| Not all gamers are fat and/or lazy. That would be like saying all writers are hermits.

I actually got bored enough to calculate the percentage and it's actually roughly 26% that are staff on the board, but I do agree with you Metal in many ways. I feel that it would be a better step to collect a small group of younger people that love this community and let them at the reins. But not all people seem to be agreeable to that though. I will say though that we are getting older and I get the impression, busier in the last few years. I'll be graduating from college myself. Somehow, I do not see myself remaining as a staff member here forever. XP

HEYIamverysensativeaboutmyweightIamNOTfatIamBIGBONEDthereisadifference.

XD /sarcasm

I'm not the picture of fitness, maybe, but I'm not fat. And I'm worse than a tv gamer... I'm a COMPUTER GAMER. The worst kind! :O And yet here I sit, not fat. Little pudgy, yes. Fat, no.

And as for the community not wanting to post, I think that's bull. I know I like posting, and I know at least three other people who do, including one of the staff. And considering the size of our cozy little community, that's a lot. So there. ;P In the end, it's like I said: the problem lies in all you other people, I'm a posting god.

Now, if only I could get around to posting... -shot-

Controlling the Chaos for fifty years.

I am a meduim framed girl with a weight of 130, I am not fat. >> And I do a lot of crap other than being on the fourm all the time, you stereotypical person you. That's like saying because I'm a girl I like pink and like to go shopeing. <<;

Bascily, there's a lot of older members that have lives. That's the main problem of most, they have lives. Which is more of a good thing than a bad thing, but a bad thing for the fourm. And with younger staff members causeing chaos...well, that wouldn't happen. It could, but that's only if the older mods handed the powers the people who aren't excatly right for the power. But, looking at some of the people on this fourm, it's not too likely. We don't have that big of an idiot population like most Sonic Fourms. So, yeah.
