Website Issues - Viper - 12-20-2013 10:16 AM

After going all in to finding out what went wrong with the site going down.

It was sort of true that the SPAM bots are the source of the issue but they did not take down the site. They simply exhausted the website's bandwidth limit, which resulted in my account becoming locked and shutting down the site.

I got my warning email today and starting playing with my statistics to find out the source of said issue. It seems a default setting was changed on the Admin side the made it so no time out limit was set... basically the website won't answer the same query even millisecond and instead only every 5 seconds. This was turned off resulting in the Bots viewing the page literally millions of times per minute till even if it was only 8 kbps resulted in it taking over 4 GB of bandwidth over repeated hit attempts.

On a fun note as a result of the site going down some bots have stopped hitting the site (as they likely auto-removed when the site went down and moved on to another victim.)

The problem is the website is now running with about .5 GB left of bandwidth for the reason of the month so if that runs out, the site will go down again till next month.

These 'attacks' seem to have started in the beginning of March 2013 (Or End of Feb 2013) growing progressive worse till it finally hit the bandwidth cap. I've down some server setting changes so the site response time may go down a little bit... this is so instead of the bots getting a response every second. That the site only reasons every 5 seconds instead. I'm looking into some better long term ones hopefully turning back on limitations will avoid this in the future.

We stopped the Bots from registering but they very much are still viewing the pages and 'attempting' to post regardless.

The picture columns which are missing are as follows from left to right...
