Instead of dodging, this time the snake decided to open its jaws and use them to intercept Ji's swing. It would attempt to clamp its jaw down onto her flail and shake very hard, trying to make her let it go.
---
Meanwhile, Gail continued to bicker with his deer friend.
"I've never used one before! I didn't know it was loaded right!" Gail yelled, getting all defensive. However, he couldn't help but realize the snake hadn't bothered to attack them even while they'd been struggling with the launcher. Looking around, he couldn't help but spot Ji suddenly taking the offensive. She looked like she was trying to hit the creature's crystal brains, or whatever they were.
"You thinkin' she's onto something? Maybe them crystals are its weak spot?"
He raised up his rifle to fire, but with Ji in the way he was afraid to shoot. He didn't want to hit her by mistake.
"A glowing weak spot? Come on, Gail, that's stupid. That's like hanging a sign on their back saying: "Shoot me here!" I chided Gail with a weary frown.
(Ji) "HEEEY!"
Having few options when the thing bit down on her flail and shook, Ji was forced to let go. She landed near Gail and Chadin, her hand quickly going to her royal crook. Anu's attention followed her.
"Maybe it is stupid, but every now and then I do feel like I'm in a videogame here. Let's try it out."
Now with the snake distracted and Ji out of the way, Gail used the extra time to line up a shot with the ironsights. One controlled burst blasted a few chunks of crystal into tiny fragments.
The creature definitely did not like that. Immediately it dropped Ji's flail as it screamed loud and long, whipping its body back and forth all over the ceiling. The body itself vibrated and rippled strongly, like a visual recording of a sound. It almost looked like it was going to vibrate itself apart completely.
Again, Gail winced from the screaming, but at least this time he expected it.
"Yup... Let's finish this guys, what do you say?" he said, after the screaming stopped.
"Huh... well I'll be a moose's uncle..." I muttered under my breath whilst clamping my hands over my ears as the creature wailed and screamed.
"Yup... Let's finish this guys, what do you say?"
I flashed Gail a toothy grin. Though, being a deer it probably didn't look nearly as devious as it would on a wolf. "Gladly." I replied, and snapped my crossbow up and fired at the creature's apparent weak spot.
Ji stayed down, but did manage to retrieve her flail. She didn't dare go for another attack with the risk of friendly fire. Anu moved close to her.
Gail fired a few more times himself at the crystal for good measure. Between his and Chadin's shots, the crystal shattered into dust. As it did, the creature wailed loudly once more, the shadowy body pulsed up and down its length. The semi-solid form melted into a black mist, which simply evaporated away into nothingness after a few seconds.
As it vanished, the lights in the room brightened somewhat. However, they didn't return to their full strength. You still couldn't see much more than a very basic outline of the room in the darkness.
While it felt good to banish that creature, the somber lighting put a damper on Gail's spirits. He only smiled briefly before he had a bad gut feeling resonate through his body.
"Somethin' tells me...that was only the start."
The wolf crouched beside the door that the snake had simply burst through. Looking through the hole, he saw a large expanse beyond. With his natural night vision, he could just make out what the next room looked like.
"It's some kind of warehouse on the other side of this door. I can see some shelves and boxes and forklifts and things. And...say, I think I see an open window too. It's high up on the wall, but it looks like there's a stack of boxes we can use to climb up to it. But we'll have to go all the way through this pitch black room to get to it..."
Just then, the group would hear a distant explosion. However, the muffled sound would imply it was somewhere far away, and probably not even in the same building.
"I hate to say it, but I think you're right, Gail. I agreed with dread.
"Nice job figuring out that thing's weak point by the way, Jii." I added, giving the displaced princess an encouraging smile.
I soon joined Gail at the door to take a look for myself. Deer may not have night vision as good as a predator species like wolves, but it sufficed. The warehouse beyond didn't lack for the creepy look, but the thought of getting out of this place and outside towards our ultimate objection was far too tempting. Besides, right before the creature burst through that door, it sounded like it had taken out at least one Swat-bot in there so it ought to be safe enough. "I think it's still our best shot. We just need to be careful. Oh, and by the way, try not to forget what I said about using your head in a fight. Brute force doesn't solve everything problem, so keep those rockets in reserve for something big; like one of Robotnik's walking mech's or something, okay? I tried not to sound too scathing, but to say I wasn't much of a people person these days would be an understatement.
(Ji) "But I didn't... never mind."
Ji and Anu stayed back. They weren't anywhere near as good as seeing in the dark as Chadin and Gail were.
Quote: "Brute force doesn't solve everything problem, so keep those rockets in reserve for something big; like one of Robotnik's walking mech's or something, okay?"
Gail gave out a disappointed sigh, as he fiddled with the rocket. So far he'd done nothing except make himself look like an idiot this entire mission, or at least that's the way he felt about it.
But this time after attaching the rocket to the launcher, he tried twisting it. The rocket made a distinct click as it locked into place. That must have been how he'd loaded it wrong. Last time there hadn't been a click. He put the bazooka away in favor of the laser rifle.
"All right...here we go..."
The wolf gingerly pushed the door open with the end of his gun. More darkness greeted them, while little else could be seen but the silhouettes of shelves and boxes. However, like a beacon of hope, they could still see the open window spilling in light on the other side of the room.
As Gail started to make way for the door though, more of the same screams and shrieks echoed throughout the building. But this time it sounded like a horde of the creatures. In fact, Gail thought horrified that it sounded like the entire city was infested, not just the building they were in.
"Oh...####... They're everywhere! THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!"
He waved the rifle around frantically, trying to spot a target. But none were evident.
